Focus on Tone

Wildlife Painting Step by Step Demonstration: Orangutan in Pastel Image: © Leigh Rust

Now the fun begins. When I work I've usually painted the image in my head so I can start applying detail from the outset.

Tone is incredibly important to the success of my images and I always try to build vibrant shadows to compliment all the lighter areas of the image. In this case, my darkest tones are Flinders blue and red violets, Bordeaux and Pilbara red.
