Starting the Hair

Wildlife Painting Step by Step Demonstration: Orangutan in Pastel Image: © Leigh Rust

With the background in, I start work describing the hair and placing highlights. When doing highlights I very rarely use titanium white, instead opting for the lightest tones in my collection such as Australian gray, burnt umber, ultramarine blue or any of the cream tones.

My lightest highlights are done using warm, white which has a slight cream bias, as opposed to the titanium which is a cooler bias.
