Rothko's Black on Gray series was his last. They have a white edge painted around the two-color composition. There are two differences to previous series: the edges of the canvas aren't painted and he used white gesso as a primer rather than a rabbitskin glue and pigment mixture (though he still let this show layer through, as in earlier paintings).
