The "Van Dongen: A Fauve in the City" Exhibition, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 22 January to 19 April 2009 includes a hundred paintings among the 200 works on show. Van Dongen was the only portraitist among the Fauvists, an influential early twentieth century group of artists known for their use of strong, unrealistic color.
