Highlights from the Van Dongen Exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com Guide

The "Van Dongen: A Fauve in the City" Exhibition, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 22 January to 19 April 2009 includes a hundred paintings among the 200 works on show. Van Dongen was the only portraitist among the Fauvists, an influential early twentieth century group of artists known for their use of strong, unrealistic color.

The exhibition traces Van Dongen's art career from its origins in Holland, to Paris and the 1905 Salon d'Automne of 1905 which established Fauvism as a new style in modern art, into his mature style. The selection of paintings in this photo gallery give a taste of the exhibition. Exhibition Website
