Top: Original painting "Freesia" by Maddy Buckman (see my comments in the Flower Portrait Painting Project Gallery).
Bottom: My suggested change. I would crop off the little bit of negative space on the right-hand side of the vase as I find it distracting. Instead I would have the vase go off the edge of the composition, and leave it to the viewer's mind to fill in what's "missing". It also strengthens the diagonal line in the composition created by the flower, its stem, and the vase.
