Many Divisionists worked with social issue themes, such as poverty and the plight of the working class. Although this painting lacks the golden, saturated light of Divisionist paintings, the colors are build up in a loose technique.
Nomellini was radically left-wing in his politics, and even spent several months in jail in 1894 accused of anarchism. He studied art at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. His paintings show the first traces of Divisionism around 1888; he later moved into Symbolism, expressing emotions through motifs from nature, and finally into a loose, Impressionistic style. He was also a published poet.
