After a childhood of misery and neglect, it's perhaps no surprise Segantini used motherhood as a theme... He found his feet in the 1870s when he started attending art classes at the Brera Academy in Milan. He won several awards for his work, with his painting The Choir of Saint Anthony in the 1879 annual exhibition at the academy catching the attention of artist and art dealer Vittore Grubicy. In 1883 he signed a three-year contract with Grubicy, and in 1885 he began to experiment with Divisionism. By the 1890s he had an international reputation as a painter, but didn't get to enjoy it long, dying at the age of 41.
