Monet settled in Giverny in 1883, staying for more than 40 years. In 1883 he wrote to his art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel saying: "Once settled, I hope to produce masterpieces."
He initially rented the house, but by 1890 his financial position had improved and he bought it, together with its outbuildings and gardens. His famous lily pond would be created a few years later.
