Reference Photos for Artists: Lions

A collection of lion photos for artists to use as reference in paintings.

By , About.com Guide

African lions are very social creatures, living together in prides, or groups. The most obvious difference between male and female lions is that males have glorious manes and much larger heads. Male lions are also significantly bigger than female lions (on average, around 180kg/400lb for a male compared to around 125kg/280lb for a female).

Top tip for painting lions: a lion's whiskers grow in rows and are arranged like bricks in a wall, i.e. they alternate and directly above each other. Each whisker is separate; they don't grow as a bunch from one spot.
