Art Glossary: Photorealism

Definition:

An art movement that rose to prominence in New York and the west coast of America during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is characterised by the meticulously detailed, realistic depiction of objects, and technical virtuosity of the artists.

Photorealism evolved as a reaction against Surrealism and Pop Art.

Artists who are considered photorealists include Chuck Close (such as his painting Frank), Robert Bechtle, Richard Estes, Audrey Flack, and Ralph Goings.

Also Known As: Realism, Radical Realism, Sharp-Focus Realism, Super-Realism, New Realism, Hyperrealism.
