Definition: A painting done on more than one canvas (or board or paper) has a different name depending on how many parts there are to it.
  • Two parts = diptych
  • Three parts = triptych
  • Four parts = tetraptych
  • Five parts = pentaptych
  • Six parts = hexaptych
  • Seven parts = heptaptych
  • Eight parts = octaptych
  • Four or more parts is also called a polyptych.

The term "multiples" means something slightly different, and has been used since the mid-1960s for art that isn't a one-off, unique piece, but rather could be reproduced any number of times. The term was adopted by artists who rejected originality and ownership of individual pieces of art as a concepts.
