By , About.com Guide

Definition:

An American painter, sculptor, and printmaker, born in Augusta, Ga., in 1930. After dropping out of the University of Southern Carolina, he moved to New York in 1949. He is credited, together with Robert Rauschenberg, with leading American art in the 1950s away from Abstract Expressionism into Pop Art and Minimal Art. For more on his life and paintings, read this chronology from MoMA.

Perhaps his best-known work is his 1955 painting of the American flag, done in a very textured manner using encaustic, oil, and collage on fabric mounted on plywood. It's currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
