By , About.com Guide

Definition:

A gray scale or value scale is a sequence of tones from light to dark that can be made between black and white (as the darkest and lightest tones respectively). A gray scale is a useful tool for a painter as you can use it to accurately judge the tone or value of the subject you're painting.
