Art Glossary: Blind Embossing

By , About.com Guide

Blind embossing in fine art printmaking

A simple example of blind embossing, of a pair of scissors. A sheet of damp paper was placed over the scissors, then a piece of thicker, dry paper to protect it, and pressure applied by hand to "squeeze" the paper around the scissors.

Definition:

Blind embossing is a printmaking technique where a print is made without any ink, resulting in only the texture and shape of the printing plate or object showing. Blind embossing is usually more successful when done in a printing press because of the amount of even pressure that's applied, but can be done by hand.
