Art Glossary: Blending

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

Definition: Blending is the technique of painting colors so that there is a gentle and gradual transition from one to the other. To blend without adding more paint, put aside the brush you have been using and use a dry, clean, soft brush to go over the paint before it's completely dry. Don't press too hard, it's more like a rapid flick across the surface.

The decorative painting technique of double-loading a brush has the effect of blending two colors together as the brushstroke is made (see How to Load a Flat Brush with Two Colors).
