This is a piece of a hibiscus flower with a digital watercolor filter applied to it. As an abstract I'd use cadmium red for an intense color and deep purplish blue for the darks. (Black straight from the tube tends to be too flat a color for me. If you use black, mix some blue into it, and a little red to create a more interesting color.)
