Pat's Prairie by Keri Ippolito
Monthly Painting Project: Changing Seasons
© Keri Ippolito 2003, 24x36", acrylic

From the Artist: "I have the lucky pleasure to have a sister that lives on a farm in Harvard, IL. I took a photo last year of her prairie which has been allowed and aided in going to a natural state. The first time I painted this was in Nevada in my hotel room (12 x 14, watercolour w/acrylic) and at the same time I painted a summer version (12 x 14). These were entered in a natural landscape show and both sold. I then tried it in this larger format. I love the open feeling of the countryside, especially since I live in an area that was mostly farms when we came some 30+ years but now sadly they are all but gone. I think I found that when we paint something we love we are successful."

From the Painting Guide: I love the foreground, with its complementary colours (the yellow and violet; red and green); it's unfortunate that the scale of the picture doesn't allow us to see how much detail or texture there may or may not be here.

Compositionally, I find the two trees draw my eye in too strongly and selfishly hold it on the horizon line, discouraging my eye from wandering back over the scene. Place a piece of paper or your hand over the right-hand tree and see how the foreground becomes more dominant and the sky seems vaster.
