Signs of Spring by Charlene Corman Brooks
Monthly Painting Project: Changing Seasons
© Charlene Corman Brooks 2003, 9x12, 140 lb watercolour paper, mixed watercolour pencils, Sanford coloured pencils, and Prang Professional

From the Artist: "I sketched from last year's photo of a tulip arrangment on a picnic table using dry paper and dry watercolour pencils. I used a watercolour wash in the background layering different colours, lavender, brown, grey, and used Sanford pencils for the wood grain. I like the detail that watercolour pencils give to a subject and the ability to layer the colours."

From the Painting Guide: This painting clearly shows what a great medium watercolour pencils can be; look at the woodgrain on the planks! To me the painting would perhaps benefit from a bit more tonal contrast; if you squint your eyes at the painting you'll see that most of it is relatively light, with the darks being the heads of the flowers and a bit of shadow under the leaves. If there'd been a low light source, the shadows would've been quite extended and would have given the picture a second pattern which would've interacted with that of the flowers and given the eye more of a feast.
