Study in Red by Faith Puleston
First Painting Sold Gallery
© Faith Puleston 2002, 50 x 70 cm, acrylic on canvas

From the Artist: I showed a few paintings for the first time recently. Among them was this rather strange one which was bought by someone who'd seen it hanging in my apartment and liked it but never expressed the desire to own it! My daughter had seen it before that and thought I must have done it on a particularly bad day! I'm not really sure why it turned out this way it, either!

I called it Study in Red but the name's really arbitrary. The photo is unfortunately slightly crooked. The lines going down the right side are acutally parallel to the edges. I also had to increase the contrast and lighting digitally because the photo turned out rather dismal. The red light is napthol straight from the tube!

I think she bought the painting because it had been admired along with several others! I hadn't even thought about selling anything, but she said she had decided to launch my "painting career". It certainly gave me confidence and next time I'm going to hazard a guess as to how much one of my paintings is worth in cash terms before showing it. I could have sold at least six if I had thought about it first, but I got into a panic and decided to take them home again!

I haven't been painting seriously for very long and don't have a philosophy beyond the desire for self-expression in a visual form after 40 years as a musician."
