From the Artist: "This is my first nude painting. Although I've been doing nude drawing for
more than forty years, I've never had a chance to do an oil painting until very recently when I joined an adult culture school. I look forward to seeing what you have to say about this painting."

From the Painting Guide: There's a lot I like about this figure painting the skin tones of the model, the way she's has a presence, the rendering of the furniture, and green cloth behind her. As a first nude oil you should be very pleased with it.
Now to the things that I think you should take another look at. It could just be the photo, but the figure's head and toes go off the painting awkwardly. Cropping the head like this makes it look too small for the body. I'd like to see the toes finished to the same level of detail as the hand, particularly the foot on the chair. I'd have liked see a bit more reflected red from upholstry in shadows on the figure's side and bottom. The positioning of the vase would be more dynamic if it overlapped the figure or was behind her elbow, rather than being positioned just beyond the elbow. In terms of composition, the torso of the body does divide the canvas in half but the angles of the legs counter this in this painting (though it's something to watch out for).
Lastly, something that's very much down to personal preference, but think about whether you want so many elements which compete for attention with the figure here the side table, vase with flowers, and colourful bit of cloth. |
You're invited to join the discussions on all the paintings in Critique Corner in the Painting Forum. Toshi said: "I don't
want to make any excuse against the comments even this is my first oil piece
of nude. I, however, still am looking for the way I should finish nude
painting. Should I only paint nude figure without adding anything else, like
flowers or background patterns, or I shoud somehow let viewer tend to see
more the main thing painted on the canvas, which I think should be
selfevident.Yet, I'd like to hear more about this painting. I'll be trying to paint more
of nude figures which seems to be very deep and challenging to me, compared
to those subjects like landscape or still life." |
