© Sue Rinker, 8 x 10", oil on canvas

From the Artist: "After painting landscape and still life for four years, I took up portrait painting in October 2002. I painted this from a photograph I took myself."

You're invited to read the discussion on this painting in Critique Corner in the Painting Forum.

Wispylynn says: "This is a very nice portrait. I actually like the imperfection in the size of her eyes. The only thing that bothers me is the background. It reminds me too much of a photo portrait. I'd rather see a background that refers to where she is and gives her a "place" to be. I'm sure whoever this little girl belongs to would adore this portrait."

From the Painting Guide: You don't say who the subject is, but it's obviously a portrait that's been created with love and your warmth towards the subject shows. The darkbackground seems a bit sombre by contrast, but it does put all the focus of the painting on the subject. I wonder how it would look with a bit more of the blue of her eyes in the background.

If the lighting is coming from the left, as suggested by the light in her hair and on her back and nose, why is the highlight in her eyes on the right? Also, take another look at size of the two eyes, the left one seems a bit large and dominates the painting a bit, pulling the viewer's focus in on it. The mouth also seems a bit narrow, but that could just be the expression; check the width of this against the corners of the eyes.
