Old Datca by Sevin Balaban
Critique Corner
© Sevin Balaban 2002, 40 x 50cm, oils

From the Artist: This is a village called 'Old Datca' on the Meditteranean.

From the Painting Guide: Once again there's an truly beautiful representation of flowers – see those Bodrum. I wonder if you've done any paintings where the flowers are the subject?

Things to consider:
Perspective: Hold a piece of paper up to the front corner of the building, it seems to loose its path at the top and swerve away from the vertical. This is the kind of distortion that could be attributed to a wide-angle lens on a camera. The lines of perspective for the bottom of the lower windows and the end of the plasterwork at the bottom and top of the building are at odds with each other; the distant point of the plasterwork isn't the same as that for the windows which they should be as they're on the same plane.
Composition: There are three prominent verticals – the two sides of yellow building and grey building on other side – which divide up the painting. This is emphasised to some extent by the foliage of the trees. Overall it emphasises the edge of the house above anything else.
