Madonna, the Song's Lady by Osvaldo Luiz Marmo
Return to Critique Corner
© 2002, Osvaldo Luiz Marmo, 12 x 16", oil on canvas

From the Artist: "I am based in Brazil. Painting portraits is my hobby – I start doing them two years ago and have, so far, painted 21 portraits. I would like to know your opinion about my work. This portrait of Madonna is based on one photo take from a site of pop singers."

You're invited to join the discussions on all the paintings in Critique Corner in the Painting Forum.

From the Painting Guide: This painting is a stylised, graphic portrait, reminiscent of the posters of movie stars from the early 20th century. The eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are very stark and aggressive. The hair seems to exist in its own right, rather than being part of the head; the nose is a rather strange shape and could probably do with some shading on the top.

Things to consider:
Painting from photos: It's hard to use a two-dimensional photograph to paint a three-dimensional person. I suggest getting a friend to sit in a similar pose to the famous person in the photo you wish to paint. This will help you with the structure of the face and body. You can then impose the famous person's features onto this base shape.
