From the Artist: "I have had a number of comments ranging from good to 'I don't like it!' from various individuals. The subject matter seems to 'offend' some people. Maybe they are not comfortable with their own anatomy. Several have commented that it is 'too Pop Art'. I personally like it. I thought that I was able to catch an interesting lighting. Many times when I paint I do things that I am not quite sure how I did it. It appears. The creative process in motion. I would appreciate getting feedback from the Forum group on this work. Thank you."

From the Painting Guide: I guess people are offended because of their feelings towards fetishes and/or feet. Or perhaps it's the memory of the scandal Fergie (Duchess of York) caused when she was photographed sucking the toes of a lover... Personally I find it intriguing.

In terms of the angle at which the foot is presented, it would fit perfectly into the Unexpected Angles Painting Project. It's not a view one easily sees of one's own feet and not the part of anatomy one often looks at on an adult (except when tickling someone!) The large size creates a degree of abstraction which you don't really feel here because your eye can take in the whole picture at once and you immediately recognise it as a foot. The toes have very interesting curves which make my eye wander in and around.

In terms of composition, the painting is too well contained by the cropping (and this may be a result of the photograph); it looks too much like an advert picture, e.g. on a billboard, which tend to fill the space; it just lacks the text to go with it. I'd say the foot either needs a bit more space to 'breathe' around the sides and top, or it should 'go off the edge' (see two versions below).

More space around the subject to allow it to "breathe".Cropped so the subject goes "off the edges".

I'm not sure about the light bit between the big toe and the next; given how dark the background is, and where the highlights on the foot are, where is this light coming from? I also wonder why the top left corner is light rather than dark; to me it draws your attention away from the foot.
