Butterfly by Mike Crawford
Return to Critique Corner
© Mike Crawford 2002, 10 x 7.5", acrylic

From the Artist: "This painting is more an abstract than a expression. It looks like a butterfly, but it isn't in the enviroment you would normally see them. The painting would probably be something you would see in stained windows. Look forward to any comments. Thank you."

From the Painting Guide: To be blunt, this neither seems abstract nor expressional, it comes across as a poor geometric motif with some similarity to butterflies but without the inherent beauty. Since the background is monochrome the comment about environment seems particularly fatuous. As with your Abstract Stained Window Trees, the colours should be more transluscent, with a feeling of light coming from the painting, rather than of a painting hung in shadow, if you're wanting it to be reminiscent of stained glass. Maybe other people will be able to say something more positive.
