Western Camp Out by Joyce Keen
Critique Corner
© Joyce Keene 2003, 16 x 20", oils

From the Artist: "This is an oil painting of cowboys by a camp fire. One is playing a guitar and the little boy is sitting on the rock listening with his dog behind him. This took a long time to paint 'cause it is from my imagination."

From the Painting Guide: The reproduction of this painting is unfortunately obscuring much of the detail and it's rather difficult to differentiate the figures and animals around the campfire, you need to look very carefully. To me the painting is caught between two genres: as a landscape the camp is far too intrusive and as a campfire scene there is too much peripheral information. It would be an interesting exercise to sketch this composition first as a more close-up scene of the campsite, and then as a broader landscape with the campsite being a much smaller element within it.
