Sunflower Chair by Donna Serio
Return to Critique Corner
© Donna Serio 2003, 16 x 20", acrylic on canvas

From the Artist: "I have been painting for about three years, and have had no formal instruction in art. This is one of my first original acrylic paintings and I was curious as to an opinion (aside from my families and friends). It is a 16 by 20 canvas. Thanks for taking the time to look at it, and I appreciate any insight you may have. "

From the Painting Guide: The photo isn't sharp: I assume either the hand holding the camera shook when the photo was taken, or it was taken through glass. This is a quirky picture, with something of a feel of fairy tales to it: the solidity of the watering can in muted brown tones which match the wooden chair (which looks like it could belong to the littlest of the three bears); the Jack-in-the-beanstalk tumbling of the ivy; the mirroring of the flowers with smaller versions; the floating of the chair in space. The picture is a bit top-heavy with the colour of the flowers drawing in the eye to the detriment of the rest of the picture.
