Severn Bridge Sunset by David Riley
Return to Critique Corner
© David Riley 2003, 16x20", oil on canvas

From the Artist: "This is my second painting; you were kind enough to give me some guidance on my first work Desk Top and I would appreciate the same for this painting. I chose the subject as I used to be able to see the bridge from my house when I lived in England and it brings back some good memories (also I had a photo to use for the painting). The bridge looks to be in a halo framed by the sunset (which is honestly how it really was), however this looks a little unatural to me, not having any sunset going behind the bridge. Would you have gone with reality like I did, or with artistic licence and put sunset behind the bridge? Also would the addition of vehicles have helped the painting in your opinion, there were none in reality. I find it very hard to judge my paintings merits or otherwise objectively as I am just so pleased to have a result. I need objective opinion and pointers please."

From the Painting Guide: I don't mind the halo, I just think it's too deep and looks odd because of this. The halo also ends abruptly, in a hard edge; I find it hard to believe it wouldn't blend into the sky more, being an atmospheric effect. The length of the reflection of the sun seems too long to me; I would've expected a bright yellow area which then fades out. But then again reality is sometimes very strange; I always thought Turner's sunset paintings (which you should look at for ideas/inspiration if you're not already familiar with them) were a bit over-the-top, till I walked along the Thames in London one misty day while the sun was setting and saw a red ball of fiery sky straight out of one of Turner's sunsets! As for cars, I think they'd be a distraction that would draw your attention away from the bridge and sunset.
