The Lights of Heidleburg Castle by Carmen Bruce
Critique Corner
© Carmen Bruce 2002, 18 x 26", pastel rendering on Colorfix Burgundyl

From the Artist: I spent about 10 days travelling throughout Europe and took so many pictures that have inspired me to translate them to paintings. My works are inspired by my love of nature, water, and architecture. I am particularly interested in your comments on how I've captured the lights.

You're invited to share your comments on this work in the Painting Forum.

From the Painting Guide: This cityscape pulled me right in and kept me looking, wishing I could see the picture in real life as a small screen shot can't do it justice.

Things to consider:
Composition: The buildings at the top are uncomfortably close to the edge. A bit more black night sky above them would give them room to 'breathe' and provide a balance to the openness of the river at the bottom. (This may be a result of cropping the image when squaring it up before emailing.)
Reflections: On close inspection, some of the reflections in the river don't match what's above them. For example there's yellow on the ramp up to the bridge but red/brown in the reflection.
Architecture: When doing architectural pictures, it's important to ensure that verticals are vertical (see towers by the bridge), unless you're trying to inspire a particular psychological effect.
