Teapot by Casey Baker
Critique Corner
© Casey Baker 2002, 9 x 12", oil pastel

From the Artist: Lately, I've had a fascination with cubism. This is my first attempt at it. Harsh criticism is welcome. Thanks!

From the Painting Guide: By 'harsh' I presume you mean totally honest.... one should always remember that a critique is merely the opinion of one person and, as with any opinion, the artist is free to agree or disagree. I admire you for tackling Cubism: it's quite a challenge you've set yourself. Your choice of colours is certainly representative of later Cubists. But the scene is seen from the same point of view and for it to be Cubist it should have several viewpoints. The form of the teapot and the books can be seen perfectly, all from the same viewpoint. The teapot has just been divided into kaleidoscopic colour shapes. I had some debate with another painter about whether the top of the teapot handle and the base on the left were or were not from another point of view. They said not, I can't decide.

Things to consider:
Lettering: The title on the book steals too much attention and is incongruous with the deconstruction of the other elements in the painting and the surroundings. Consider taking it out, or showing only part thereof.
Background: While it works on its own, it doesn't tie in to the subject or add anything to it. The books have large flat surfaces which could be in the background, thereby also showing them from a different point of view.
