Poppies by Alan Dell
Return to Critique Corner
© Alan Dell, 14 x 10", watercolour.

From the Artist: "I have been painting in watercolour for about three years. Poppies is painted wet on wet in watercolour. I painted it after seeing a demonstration by Hugh Brading, a painter from New Zealand. I was impressed by his use of raw colour dropped into wet paper and allowed to 'paint itself'. I have attempted to give the impression of a field of poppies by painting partial flowers at the edges of the painting so that the eye is not 'stopped' at the edge of the picture. I would appreciate comments on this painting. Thanks."

From the Painting Guide: You should certainly continue to experiment with this technique: the colour flows on its petals is very attractive. The flower in the bottom right-hand corner is settled right on the edge, spoiling the effect of the partial flowers (it could also just be the way the photo is cropped). The small depth of field effect is reminiscent of a photograph: there's a great deal of detail in the flowers in the foreground, it seems to lack any midground, and then there's the blurred distance. This gives a very dense bottom-heavy feel to the painting.
