From the Painting Guide: This is a lovely group portrait, capturing their concentration on what they're doing in the bright sunlight. Too often portraits of children are still and formal – and we all know children don't sit still for long! It'll be a memory not only of them at a particular age, but also bring back the enjoyment of the times you have gardened together.

Just look at the subtle colours in the skintones and the clothing, also that red T-shirt and the background. Although the flowers in the foreground are closer to the viewer, they don't dominate the painting but draw your eye in and then up to the faces. Red is a very dominant colour and so the red T-shirt draws your eye in, but I don't think it does this too selfishly as the strong green background (green and red are complementary colours) balances its intensity.
