Making a Frame to Mail a Painting Safely

By , About.com Guide

I have sent my paintings by mail many times. I paint with acrylics on 1/4" masonite. I make a tight frame around it with 1/2 " wood straping. I place the painting in the frame good side up, in a plastic bag. I then insulate it with cardboard out to the edge. Then I staple cardboard to both sides, tape all around the perimeter and then it is ready to ship. I have never had a damaged painting. The cheap frame protects the edges and corners and the good side of the painting has two layers of cardboard to protect it. I haven't sent one that was in a finished frame yet but I would protect it and package it the same, just use wider straping wood.
