Photographing Objects for a Still Life

A helpful tip to add to your painting knowledge.

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

When I see still life paintings, I am always envious of all the lovely china and glass ware that have been used. Somehow, I have never collected the sort of colourful items, that I would like to include in my painting.

So, I have started to photograph, with my digital camera, tea pots, jugs, cups and saucers, bowles and vases that I see in china shops or department stores. This isn't as good as setting up a still life in situ, but it help to develop an idea.

You can print them out, even cut them out and play at rearraging them and cheat a little by scaling them up to the size for the painting and using this as a template for the item in the art work.
