Tightening Loose Canvas

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

If your canvas is terribly loose on the stretcher bars, you may have no choice but to remove it from the bars and restretch it carefully. If it's only a little bit loose, I've had luck applying boiling hot water with a large sponge -- just dampen the BACK of the canvas only -- then immediately use a hair dryer on hot pointed at the damp canvas to 'shrink' the canvas fabric. Works well every time. Work quickly and don't saturate the canvas, just get it damp to the touch.
