I've heard others say that strip framming is fine and that the buyer will get their own frame but I think this gives the buyer too much credit and I think it depends on the style in which one paints. Many abstract paintings would look completely wrong in a decorative frame. I'm a realist landscape painter, I make my own frames but they are fairly elaborate. If you go into the higher end galleries that sell representational paintings you will find that they all have good quality frames. That tells me that if I want to get to that level (which I do, but I'm not there yet) I need to emulate what the pros are doing.
