Limit the palette to the Jack Russell's two colors as well as some shades of gray, perhaps
Payne's Gray with a warm color, i.e. burnt sienna, added, or you can mix your own gray -- not black and white though! Keep the sketches very simple as you might want to try painting negative spaces (the colors and background) leaving the white paper (his primary color). Sounds complicated but if you will make your initial washes light in color, you can go back and darken them with subsequent washes of color until you get the intensity you like and the shadows on the white fur are definitely subtle. As for background colors that would be your choice -- consider the dog's temperament. Is he peppy and fun or is he very mild mannered. Your background should say something about him even if it is just color!
