Finding Good But Cheap Turps for Oil Painting

A tip to add to your oil painting knowledge

By , About.com Guide

I had a very good teacher (with an MFA) who uses ordorless mineral spirits to clean brushes and as a thinner. When he mixes a medium he uses a good grade of turpentine. He said just go to a hardware store and buy 'distilled gum spirits of turpentine.' While this may sound strange to you, he also said that the 'better' it smells, the better it is. Good turpentine has more of a 'sweet' smell if that makes sense.
