What Brand of Water Soluble Oils is Best?

Is any brand of water soluble oils better than the others?

By , About.com Guide

Most of the major paint companies make artist's quality water soluble oils; some make student ranges too. As with all paints, there are differences between brands, such as thickness of paint and the number of colors available. The best way to decide which is the best brand for you is to try various brands of water soluble oils and see which you prefer using. (You can mix brands of water soluble oils, as with 'normal' oils.)

Here are a few personal opinions from artists using water soluble oil paints:

I use Windsor and Newton, plus a few others as additions. -- Michael9

I did tried Windsor Newton brand and found them to be too thick. I would try either Grumbacher's Max or the Holbein Duo. My friend uses the Duo brand and is very pleased with the results -- very rich color. Max comes in a student grade so you can afford to try out many colors (though I recommend a limited palette for more color control as a beginner). -- Artman54

I have been using the Winsor and Newton water soluble oils for several years. I think that they're fantastic. -- Robert Sadler

How Well Do Water Soluble Oils Painting Last?
I have only been using water soluble oils for a few years, so I can't say a lot about wear. They seem to be hold up quite well, even the painting in which I mixed water based with oil based (the paints say you can do this). -- Starrpoint

I have gone over unfinished paintings after a few months so far with no problem. – Tootsiecat
