Step 1: Start with a cut section of thin plywood, masonite, or plastic approx 8x12". bore a one-and-a-half inch thumb hold on one side.
Step 2: From an art supplier or auto store, purchase a 7x11" rubberised magnetic sheet (the same material fridge magnets are made with). You can buy larger sizes and cut it to your choice of size or shape.
Step 3: Place the magnetic sheet side up on the board, leaving the hole exposed. Secure with double-back tape and cover with Saran wrap or place it in a plastic bag which is replaceable. This keeps everything clean and dry.
Step 4: Find some round, metal jar covers (some spray paint can tops are steel; being deeper they're great for large amounts of paint). These will adhere to the protected sheet. To clean them, place in a warm, soapy can of water. After 20 minutes you can easily clean them.
Extra tip for keeping paints moist: If you're using oils, use turps. If you're using liquid acrylics, add a few drops of drying extender. If you want to save your paints for a later time, place the entire palette in a clear plastic bag.
