Marion Boddy-Evans' Painting BlogRebuttal of the Art Renewal Center’s ClaimsQuite why or how isn't something I've figured out totally, but people keep coming across and commenting on a short blog I wrote a over a year ago now, entitled "Critiquing the Art Renewal Center". The latest comment was posted by Gregory Scheckler, a painter whose "artwork relies on traditions of Renaissance oil painting invigorated with contemporary imagery". Scheckler says: "For those of you seeking a scholarly rebuttal of the Art Renewal’s claims, misdirections, and falsehoods, you might like to check my article Questioning Classical Realism: A Critique of Ross's 'The Great 20th Century Art Scam' as Related to the Art Renewal Center. ... Many of the artists associated with the ARC are fantastic realist painters [but] in my opinion the ARC’s pitched diatribes do their art some harm."
Scheckler's article is certainly long (14 pages, including footnotes), but digestible. It's worth dipping into even if you don't give a fig about the core issues; start with the section on page 10 about how we live in an era with more opportunities to make a living from art than ever before.
