A triptych by Francis Bacon of fellow artist (and friend) Lucian Freud became the "world's most expensive painting" at a Christie's art auction this week, selling for US$142,405,000. The same auction saw a new record for the work of a living artist too, with Jeff Koons's "Balloon Dog (Orange)" sculpture sold for US$58.4 million. Read the New York Times news report on it.

I really love how you worded this – yet another “most expensive painting” – lolů. oh – and thanks for noting the Balloon Dog sale too – because I found that very interesting to learn more about Koon and the Carlson & Co. (now out of business). good NPR article here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127239760

I wonder… If in place of Lucian freud, the model was an obscure celebrity, what would have been the actual price of this painting?

@Yover: I’d wondered the same. I think it being Lucian Freud definitely adds to the appeal of the painting.
