Talented artist ! He is not frightened about using… black color among other colors in a same work !
I very rarely use black, because I find I too easily end up dirtying other colours. But there are times when it’s perfect. The lesson we should learn from the Impressionists is to not automatically reach for black when we want a dark, but to use it when black is the right colour (rather than tone).
I agree. Yellow + black, especially, is disastrous ! But ultramarine, Prussian blue or alizarin crimson + Ivory black can be magic.
A very spicy discovery: pigment “Chromated Black” (Gamblin) for instance, is made up of:
Chlorinated and bromated phtalocyanine, quinacridone red b ( PG 36, PV 19).
