How Long Does Acrylic Last in a Tube?

By July 14, 2012

Follow me on:

If the lid on a tube of acrylic paint is on properly -- straight and tight, not skew and with the screw-thread clogged up with dried paint -- it'll last years, particularly if it's not stored somewhere warm such as in direct sunlight or near a heater. I've got some tubes that are still usable with the label design before the current label design.

Cultivate the habit of putting tube caps on immediately you've squeezed some paint out. You'll feel when a tube is starting to harden; the paint stiffens up and it's harder to squeeze out. Make a point of using it up before it dries completely. If it's too late, you'll have to use it for some 3D mixed media piece!
