If you've been wondering where you might find a life painting or drawing class, or an open studio where there's a model available, this directory is worth looking at. It's compiled and maintained by Andrew Cahner, an experienced life model and author of The Art Model’s Handbook, a guide for anyone thinking of modeling or using a model. (Buy Direct, see Contents and sample chapters),

Cahner says: "The longevity of some of these drawing groups is noteworthy. Probably the most impressive is the Charcoal Club of Baltimore where life drawing sessions have been ongoing for 125 years." It's a bit intimidating if you've never done it before, but once you do you'll experience for yourself what a creative stimulation it can be.

A fortnight ago I started a life class at our local college. It's a couple of hours once a week, but it already been such a creative boost. Not only is it the change of pace, but it's also being in a group context rather than alone -- and with a fab tutor to challenge and help. This week I did a detailed graphite drawing of my left hand holding a pencil. It's so unlike what I usually do whether either drawing or painting. Almost totally line, very little tone, and definitely no sweeping expressionist smudging! I've got it up in my studio and keep staring at it. Without the life class, it wouldn't have happened.

Thanks a lot for the list. I have to admit it has been a while since I have been to a life drawing class. I think it helps if you can muster the courage to go. I find my drawing skills in general improve after life drawing sessions.
