Practical Can be Beautiful

Wednesday November 12, 2008

Few would disagree that beauty is part of art, but for me there's also beauty in the materials and tools of painting. Such as a handmade glass muller.

I rarely use mine to grind pigment. Instead it sits around as an inspirational paperweight, catching the light, creating sparkles and shifting shadows.

I use a mortar and pestle occasionally as well… and keep mine on the window sill when not in use. The set’s made from green marble. :)

How lovely! My daughter just learned about grinding and mixing colors (she told me all about verdigris!), so this WW photo is very timely as well as beautiful.
