The Final Matisse-Style Studio Painting
Wednesday October 29, 2008
I've really enjoyed the In the Style of Matisse painting project. The discussions on the forum about why this painting is a Big Deal (here's why) and the discovery that doing something similar isn't as easy as it seems. The variation in dominant color and the selection of which elements to reduce to outline and which not.The last painting added is Seeing Red by Crystal Hover, bringing the total number of submissions to 30. Not bad for such a specialized subject. Together the paintings make a fascinating gallery of flattened perspective and strong color. Thanks to everyone who participated and everyone who shared their paintings.
I'm busy contemplating who to select of next year's "In the style of" painting project. I'm leaning towards Whistler and his nocturne series, where tonal variation is kept to a minimum. Here's an example: Nocturne: Blue and Gold, Old Battersea Bridge. Who do you suggest?
