Discuss in my forum

There's a new discussion thread on the Painting Forum about favorite contemporary painters, following on from the earlier one about favorite old Masters. Britrail includes Ken Howard in his selection. I've a DVD of him painting in Venice that I've watched quite a few times. I find it intriguing how he'll mix up a color then dab a little bit onto the painting to see if it works or not, and just leave it there.

Forum Host Starr says it's "Gerald. He inspires me to keep at it. When I first came to [the] forum, I was a wreck artistically. Afraid to show anything and convinced I paint all wrong." For non-forum readers, that's Gerald Dextraze who has shared innumerable tips on the forum, some of which have been put into article format, such as his tips on glazing with oils.

My list of inspirational contemporary painters looks like this: Lucian Freud for his use of color in flesh and way of seeing figures. South African artist Peter Pharoah for his abstracted realism in his wildlife and figure paintings. Scottish artist Pam Carter for the colors and shapes she sees in landscapes.

Who's your favorite(s) or most inspirational contemporary painter? Join the discussion here...
