Art materials shops in London Whenever I'm in London there are two art materials shops I always make a point of visiting. One because it's just around the corner from a gallery I always visit (and can have good bargains); the other because it feels like a treasure-trove.

The Charing Cross Road branch of Cass Arts is literally around the corner from the National Portrait Gallery. It's a tiny shop that's crammed from edge to edge with art supplies, and often so many people you feel like a sardine. If you're traveling and need a new sketchbook, this is where I'd go. There are often good bargains to be had (I once got a free pocket watercolor set with my purchase).

The treasure-trove is L. Cornelissen & Son, which is on the same road as the British Museum. If you had to walk past it to get to the museum, no doubt it'd also be a sardine can, but as you don't, it's generally quiet. When I first lived in London I was rather intimidated by this serious-looking shop, with its rows of glass jars full of pigment and little paper bags of exotic-seeming resins and "ingredients". But I've always found the staff friendly, and they certainly don't mind if you're "just looking". Read more about my favorite art materials stores in London...

What/where's your favorite art supplies store that you can walk into, not an online store? One I remember fondly from trips to New York is the Pearl Paint Shop in Manhattan with its multiple floors...
