While there is no doubt that some days the results of what I'm doing with a brush and paint are more satisfying than others, that some days it seems to go right and other days I just seem to produce a mess, I still need to put in the hours. But putting this way does rather ruin the romantic image of being an artist somewhat, doesn't it...

So true! When we are ‘at work’ painting we make progress and steady improvement, inspiration can seem spontaneous and acted on at the moment or it shows up later.
I have found this to be very true. If I don’t keep at it, when I am inspired, I will not have the skill to do what I see. We need to excerise our artistic muscles so we can perform when it is important.
